Low Cost Scavenging Motion Decoy
submitted by member Greg P.

The use of motion decoys has become one of the hottest new techniques to hunt crows in recent years. While there are a number of commercial products available, it is also possible to create a very effective motion decoy for the cost of a decoy and a few supplies from a hardware store. Follow the instructions below and give it a try.

Materials

1 full body crow decoy
1 piece of 2 by 4 that is about 4in. long
1 small sheet of plywood
1 8in. spring that is pretty wide and rigid
1 brown cloth and some old rags

Construction & Use

First you need to cut the plywood so it is one square foot. Second use a hot glue gun and glue the piece of 2 by 4 onto one corner. Next, drill a hole the width of the spring into the center of the 2 by 4. Insert the spring and make sure it is very secure. Next, take the brown cloth and lay it on top of the wood. Make a slit in it so the spring can fit through it. Put the old rags under the cloth and shape them into an animal like structure. Next find a way to fasten the cloth to the wood, such as stapling or glue. Spray paint the spring black so it does not shine. Cut the decoy's stake so it is about 4 or 5 inches long. Stick the stake in the spring and turn the decoy so that it is facing the cloth. Put a screw in the stake or do something so when you pull on the decoy and let go the decoy does not go flying or turn away from the cloth.

Now that the decoy is secured to the spring, you want to attach something under the beak so you can tie a jerk-line off of it. Finally, put some red and black spots on the cloth where the old rags are. In doing this you now have something that looks like a crow feeding on a dead animal. Now hook up the jerk-string and pull as crows visually enter the area.
